Also called Amoxil, Moxatag. Penicillin-class antibiotic (aminopenicillin).

Primary uses clinicians actually reach for this drug for. Local resistance and your own history can take a use off the list.
Clinicians sometimes use it for infections that are not the headline use on the carton, when cultures or local patterns support it. Off-label does not mean optional, and it does not mean you may start it yourself.
Adult product labeling lists more than one schedule. Kidney function, the infection site, and the exact product decide which one is written. Do not pick a row and start.
| Situation | Example adults may see on a label or guideline | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Many mild to moderate ear, nose, throat, skin, and urinary infections on adult labeling | 500 mg every 12 hours, or 250 mg every 8 hours | Duration is part of the prescription, not a number you extend. |
| More severe infections of those sites, and many lower-respiratory infections on adult labeling | 875 mg every 12 hours, or 500 mg every 8 hours | A worse-feeling illness is a reason to be seen, not a reason to jump to the higher row. |
| Confirmed strep throat in adults | Often 500 mg two or three times daily for about 10 days, depending on the product chosen | Shorter courses are sometimes studied. Only the prescriber shortens the plan. |
Augmentin is amoxicillin plus clavulanate. The second ingredient blocks some bacterial enzymes. It is still a penicillin, it causes more diarrhea, and it carries a liver-injury warning, especially with longer use and in older adults.
Adult labeling commonly uses 875 mg/125 mg every 12 hours or 500 mg/125 mg every 8 hours. You cannot build that combination by taking extra amoxicillin. Take it at the start of a meal if the label says so.
Clinicians reach for it when beta-lactamase is likely: some bite wounds, some sinus and ear infections that actually need an antibiotic, and some skin infections. It is a poor choice for a chest cold.
Yes only inside the narrow band below. The same visit is supposed to refuse the drug outside that band.
How same-day e-prescriptions and local pickup work. If the drug is prescribed, use a pharmacy you can reach today. Mail order is the wrong speed for an acute infection.
Amoxicillin and Augmentin are both penicillins. A serious reaction to either rules out both. A rash during mononucleosis is common and is not always a lifelong allergy, but you do not retest that at home. After anaphylaxis, a cephalosporin such as cephalexin is not automatically safe. Cephalexin shares a side chain with amoxicillin, so the cross-reaction question is real and belongs to a clinician.
Amoxicillin is often used in pregnancy when a bacterial infection needs treatment. The obstetric clinician still chooses the drug and the dose. Do not start a leftover bottle because a previous pregnancy used it.
Amoxicillin has no disulfiram-style reaction with alcohol. Alcohol can worsen dizziness, stomach upset, and dehydration while you are ill. It does not make a viral infection into a reason to take the drug.
Severe watery diarrhea during or after any antibiotic can be C. difficile. Mouth or throat swelling is an emergency: call 911 or 999.
These are budgeting bands for a common U.S. generic fill, not a national average and not a GoodRx quote. Discount-card prices change by pharmacy and ZIP code, and a card usually cannot be combined with insurance on the same fill. A telehealth visit is a separate bill, often advertised around $29 to $129 in late October 2026. The medicine is extra. Ask the pharmacy for today’s cash price and today’s coupon price before you travel.
| Product | U.S. cash planning band | Discount-card band, GoodRx-type | Telehealth plus local pickup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generic amoxicillin 500 mg, about 21 to 30 capsules | Often about $10–$30 | Often about $4–$15 | Visit fee plus this pharmacy price, picked up locally |
| Generic amoxicillin-clavulanate (Augmentin), a usual adult course | Often about $20–$60 | Often about $15–$40 | Same visit-plus-pharmacy math. It is a different prescription. |
| Brand Amoxil or Moxatag, if a pharmacy still stocks it | Usually much higher than generic | Coupons rarely make the brand the rational buy | Ask for the generic unless the prescriber required a specific release type. |
When the bacteria are susceptible, many people feel better within one to three days. Fever from confirmed strep often starts to ease within about 48 hours. That is an expectation, not a promise. No improvement by about 48 to 72 hours, or any worsening, is a call to the prescriber. Feeling better is not a reason to save the rest.
Sometimes. A clinician licensed where you are can send an e-prescription the same day if amoxicillin fits and a local pharmacy has it. The visit can also end with no antibiotic. A website that sells capsules with no clinician is not a telehealth partner.
No. Augmentin adds clavulanate. The dose, the diarrhea risk, and the liver warning are different. A penicillin allergy applies to both.
Take a missed dose when you remember unless it is close to the next dose. Skip it then. Do not take two doses at once. If you vomit soon after a dose, ask the pharmacist before you repeat it. The label and the pharmacist outrank this sentence.
There is no Flagyl-type reaction. Alcohol still makes side effects and dehydration more likely. It does not treat the infection and it does not justify starting the drug for a virus.
